An environmental permit in accordance with the Finnish Environmental Protection Act (86/2000) is required for any mining operations. Environmental permits are granted by the Regional State Administrative Agencies and the compliance of the permit regulations is supervised by the regional Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.
Keliber Oy has valid environmental permits issued in 2006 for the operations of the Länttä lithium mine and the Kalavesi production plant.
In February 2019, the Regional State Administrative Agency for Western and Inland Finland granted Keliber an environmental permit for the Syväjärvi open pit mine operations and a water permit for the temporary draining of lakes Syväjärvi and Heinäjärvi, in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act (527/2014) and the Water Act (587/2011). Three appeals were filed in the Administrative Court of Vaasa against the Regional State Administrative Agency’s decision. The granted permit is not yet legally valid.
- Keliber Oy filed an application under Section 199 of the Environmental Protection Act to the Regional State Administrative Agency for Western and Inland Finland for the right to initiate activities related to the preparatory work of its mining operations in accordance with the permit decision.
- The Regional State Administrative Agency for Western and Inland Finland has granted Keliber a permit under the Environmental Protection Act to initiate the preparatory work for the mining operations in the open pit mine of Syväjärvi.
Pending environmental permit applications
Keliber has submitted applications on 30 June 2021 to the Regional State Administrative Agency for Western and Inland Finland (AVI) for environmental and water management permits for the Rapasaari mine and the Päiväneva concentrator.
Keliber has submitted an environmental permit application for its lithium chemical plant to be located in the Kokkola Industrial Park to the Regional State Administrative Agency of Western and Inland Finland on December 4, 2020.
